Iced Tea Pale Ale – Spinnakers Gastro Brewpub

I took Monday June 5th off work as I had to be home to give access to a fire inspection. Seeing as I was busy on the weekend visiting friends and then attending Vancouver Craft Beer Week I did not have time to hike on the weekend. I took the opportunity in the afternoon to head out to a very popular although very short hike in North Vancouver.

The hike is located in Deep Cove a neighborhood in North Vancouver. You access the hike off of Panorama Drive with a public parking lot at the Deep Cove Yacht Club or in front of the Deep Cove Kayak Centre but do not park illegally as they will tow you. Durring the summer they have decided to limit the amount of people on this trial so if you do not get there early you may be waiting in line to hike. This is also a small portion of the Baden Powell Trail that goes from Deep Cove all the way to Horseshoe Bay. The trail starts right off of Panorama Drive as I mentioned between some houses.

While the trail is only 1.9km from start to the Quarry Rock lookout it is like the old stories from your parents about going uphill both way to school. You definitely go up many more stairs on the way to the lookout than on the way back but it goes up and down the entire way. When I hit the trail I really like to get lost in nature. This trail is all boardwalk, stairs and bridges now and I wish that it was just a trail. Between the trail head and the viewpoint there is only 100 meters of elevation change but there is definitely more accumulated elevation gain on this trail.

While the trail is not very wild anymore the view from Quarry Rock is awesome! It is easy to get lost in your thoughts while sitting and enjoying the view.

Even with a good sit down for lunch and a drink i still did this trail in 2 hours. A hike for me is usually 5 hours or longer but I made an exception for a wonderful view on a difficult time frame. When it comes right down to it I would recommend doing this trail on a weekday during the day or first thing in the morning on a weekend.

Like always a hike is better with a trail beer at your final destination. While I ate my lunch on Quarry Rock i enjoyed a Iced Tea Pale Ale from Spinnakers Gastro Brewpub out of Victoria BC.

The beer pours into my B Cup a deep orange with a white head. The aroma consists of tea, lemon and maybe some grain. The flavour is of tea, herbal hops, mild lemon, pith and some mild bitterness. The alcohol content comes in at 4% with an IBU of 15. Other than the fact I think this could use a bit of sweetness to offset the tea flavour I liked what they did with this release.
